The Simikot Education Project

Cost: $11,000/ pilot year

NGN's field experience and data collection in the Karnali area of Humla since 2007, points to the lack of educational opportunity as one of the primary causes of child trafficking and migration to Kathmandu. Parents and children should not have to face the choice between remaining together as a family and education. With your support and the expertise of NGN, this will change! You can be a part of achieving this educational dream for the children of Humla.

This summer NGN is launching an educational improvement project in Simikot, Humla where we recently returned  31 children. This effort will impact not only the 31 kids still in our care,  but over 554 kids from surrounding villages who walk hours a day to get to school in Simikot. At least they should have a school with motivated teachers, books, materials, and furniture when they get there!

 Project Goals:

•Create and manage a volunteer teacher support program
• Provide teacher trainings, mentorship and support
• Open a library, which will evolve to a community center for events, trainings for teachers and women, student literary and educational enrichment.
• Provide books in addition to text books reinforcing reading for pleasure
• Provide teaching materials for hands-on instruction
• Provide sufficient benches and desks
• Facilitate regular meetings with local school leadership, teachers and district agencies.

 Some Specific Needs:

$ 500 -- Hands on teaching materials (maps, math materials, posters, dictionaries, musical instruments, games)
$ 1300 -- tables and benches
$ 700 -- Two teacher trainings, 13 teachers
$ 500 – books for library
$ 500 – School supplies (notebooks, pens, pencils, ink, rulers, backpacks)

It is not too early to pick a target, rally your friends, classmates and campus community and plan a fundraising event for The Simikot Education Project.
