NGN’s Mission
Next Generation Nepal reconnects trafficked children with their families and communities in post-conflict Nepal by:
- Searching remote regions to find families of children who were taken by child traffickers with false promises of safety and education.
- Reconnecting these children with their families by facilitating regular communications and visits.
- Caring for children in transitional homes that offer safety and security during the reconnection process.
- Strengthening local communities to support the safe reunification of children with their families whenever possible, in partnership with local and international organizations.
NGN’s Vision
A future Nepal where children live together with their families in strong, safe communities that can provide the care and formal and informal education and life skills necessary for a productive life in rural Nepal.
Core Belief Statement:
NGN believes that trafficked and displaced children are best cared for by their own families and communities whenever possible.
NGN also believes that:
“All children have a right to a family, and families have a right to care for their children. Unaccompanied and separated children must be provided with services aimed at reuniting them with their parents or primary legal or customary caregivers as quickly as possible.”
- UNICEF position on The Principle of Family Unity (2004)
NGN’s Impact:
Since 2006, NGN’s small staff has made significant progress realizing our mission by:
- Finding the families of over 300 trafficked children and reconnecting them through regularly facilitated communication.
- Assessing local economic, political, educational, and health conditions in 52 villages to determine viability of child reunification.
- Reuniting 35 children with their families, with another 20 children returning to their communities is scheduled for April, 2010.
- Supporting over 50 trafficked children ages 3 -17 in home care environments.
